Puppy food is not adult food with a puppy on the bag. The calcium-phosphorus ratio, protein level, and DHA content all matter during growth — getting them wrong, especially in large breeds, causes lifelong skeletal problems. Here's what to actually feed.
What to look for on the label
- "Complete and balanced for growth" — AAFCO or FEDIAF-compliant for puppies specifically.
- Protein ≥ 22% (dry matter basis) for small/medium, ≥ 24% for large breeds.
- DHA / omega-3 listed — supports brain and retinal development. Fish oil or fish meal in the top 5 ingredients.
- Calcium ≤ 1.5% for large-breed formulas — higher levels cause developmental orthopaedic disease.
- Life stage printed on bag — "puppy" or "growth"; avoid "all life stages" for large breeds.

How much to feed

Split into 4 meals/day until 4 months, then 3 meals/day until 6 months, then 2 meals/day. Free-feeding (bowl always full) is not recommended — it overfeeds most breeds and makes toilet training harder.

- Grain-free unless prescribed — FDA 2019 investigation linked some grain-free diets to DCM.
