Puppy food is not adult food with a puppy on the bag. The calcium-phosphorus ratio, protein level, and DHA content all matter during growth — getting them wrong, especially in large breeds, causes lifelong skeletal problems. Here's what to actually feed.

What to look for on the label

Our picks — small breed puppy

Best overall: Black Hawk Puppy Small Breed Chicken & Rice

Aussie-made, AAFCO-compliant, consistent formula for years. Protein 26%, calcium 1.3%, DHA-fortified. $70–90 for 3kg at Pet Circle, the most widely available small-breed puppy food in Australia.

Best premium: Royal Canin Mini Puppy

Kibble piece size is genuinely smaller — matters for 8–12 week old toy breeds. More expensive ($110–140 for 3kg) but the size-matched kibble reduces choking risk and slows eating.

Best value: Advance Puppy Plus Small Breed

AAFCO-compliant, made in Australia by Mars Petcare. $55–70 for 3kg. Completely serviceable for 90% of small breed puppies.

Our picks — medium breed puppy

Best overall: Hill's Science Diet Puppy Medium

The formulation most commonly endorsed by Australian vets. Protein 28%, controlled calcium, DHA supplementation. $130–160 for a 7.5kg bag.

Best premium: Ziwi Peak Puppy Air-Dried

Air-dried NZ-made food with 96% meat content. Nearest thing to a raw diet that's still complete and balanced. $180–220 for 1kg — expensive but lasts much longer than kibble (feed ~1/3 the volume).

Best value: Advance Puppy Plus Rehydrate

Mid-range Aussie-made, good digestibility, around $90 for a 7.5kg bag.

Our picks — large breed puppy (20kg+ adult weight)

Critical: large-breed puppies must eat large-breed puppy formula specifically — not adult, not all-life-stages, not small/medium puppy. Controlled-calcium formulations prevent hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and osteochondrosis.

Best overall: Royal Canin Maxi Puppy

The gold standard for large-breed puppies in Australia. Calcium controlled at 1.2%, protein 30%. $180–210 for 15kg.

Best value: Black Hawk Large Breed Puppy Chicken & Rice

AAFCO-compliant large-breed growth formula. $150–180 for 15kg — cheaper than Royal Canin and meets all the same nutritional requirements.

Best premium: Hill's Science Diet Puppy Large Breed

$200–240 for a 15kg bag. Strong clinical evidence for joint development support. Overkill for most mixed-breed large pups; justifiable for high-risk breeds (Labs, Goldens, Shepherds).

How much to feed

Feeding guide on the bag is a starting point — real requirements vary by ±20% based on activity and metabolism. Our puppy feeding calculator gives a more accurate number based on current weight and expected adult weight.

Split into 4 meals/day until 4 months, then 3 meals/day until 6 months, then 2 meals/day. Free-feeding (bowl always full) is not recommended — it overfeeds most breeds and makes toilet training harder.

What to avoid

Where to buy in Australia

Pet Circle has the widest range and the best prices on 15kg bags of premium food. Autoship discounts add another 5%.

For parasite prevention (Nexgard Spectra, Simparica Trio) — also needed from 8 weeks — Budget Pet Products is consistently cheapest.
