Puppy feeding rules of thumb
- Under 4 months: 4 meals a day. Tiny stomachs, huge growth.
- 4–6 months: 3 meals a day. Growth slows.
- 7+ months: 2 meals a day. Most dogs can move to adult kibble at 10–12 months (small breeds earlier, large breeds later).
- Never free-feed — puppies self-overfeed and the rapid growth predicts joint disease in large breeds.
- Weigh the food on kitchen scales, not by cup. Cups are 20–30% unreliable.
When to transition to adult food
Small breeds (under 10 kg adult) typically transition at 10 months. Medium and large breeds transition at 12–15 months. Giant breeds (Great Dane, Mastiff) stay on large-breed puppy food until 18–24 months to avoid rapid skeletal growth.
