What C3, C5 and C7 actually cover, when to vaccinate, when titre testing is appropriate, and how the Australian parvo risk map changes the answer. Written for first-time owners.

Dog vaccinations in Australia are branded by how many diseases the combined shot covers. The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) and World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) update guidelines every 2โ€“3 years โ€” the current position is clearer than most clinic websites make it look.

What C3, C5, C7 cover

C3 โ€” core vaccine, recommended for every dog - Canine distemper virus - Canine adenovirus (hepatitis) - Canine parvovirus

C5 โ€” C3 plus kennel cough cover - Everything in C3 - Parainfluenza virus - Bordetella bronchiseptica (bacterial component of kennel cough)

C7 โ€” C5 plus leptospirosis cover - Everything in C5 - Two additional leptospira strains

C7 is generally only used in areas with known leptospirosis risk โ€” parts of far-north Queensland, Northern Territory, and rural WA. Most metro and suburban Australian vets use C5 as the standard annual shot.

The puppy series

AgeShotNotes
6โ€“8 weeksFirst C3 or C5Often given by breeder
10โ€“12 weeksSecond C3 or C5Start socialisation ~5 days after
14โ€“16 weeksThird C3 or C5Full immunity ~2 weeks after this shot
12 months after third shotAdult boosterThen every 1โ€“3 years

The three-shot puppy series matters. Maternal antibodies passed from the mother can interfere with the vaccine response, and those antibodies fade at different ages in different puppies. A two-shot schedule (still common at some clinics) leaves 10โ€“15% of puppies inadequately protected against parvo โ€” which kills 50โ€“90% of untreated puppies in Australia.

Australia-specific parvovirus risk

Parvo is not evenly distributed. 2023 veterinary data showed highest case rates in: - Regional WA (Kimberley, Pilbara) - Rural NSW (Central West, Hunter) - Regional QLD (Rockhampton, Townsville catchments)

If you're adopting a puppy from a rescue or pet store in any regional area, do not let the puppy touch the ground in public spaces until at least 2 weeks after the third vaccination. Carry them, or use a stroller. Parvo survives in soil for up to 12 months.

Socialisation vs vaccination โ€” the trade-off

The puppy socialisation window closes around 14 weeks. A puppy that misses broad exposure to people, dogs, surfaces and environments during weeks 6โ€“14 has a much higher lifetime risk of fear, aggression, and reactivity.

The AVA's 2023 position: start controlled socialisation after the second shot (from ~12 weeks). Puppy preschools that require proof of second vaccination and clean premises are safer than keeping the puppy isolated until 16 weeks. Isolation causes far more behavioural damage than it prevents disease.

Adult dogs โ€” annual or triennial?

WSAVA says core vaccines (C3) every 3 years is sufficient for most adult dogs. Kennel cough component (the extra bits in C5) is typically given annually because immunity fades faster.

Most Australian boarding kennels and doggy daycares require annual C5 as a condition of entry โ€” that's the practical reason most owners stick with annual.

Titre testing

A blood titre test measures antibody levels for distemper, hepatitis, and parvo. If the titre is protective, you can skip the C3 booster that year. Costs ~$80โ€“150, versus ~$90โ€“120 for a shot โ€” so it's more about avoiding unnecessary vaccination than saving money. Sensible for older dogs, dogs with prior vaccine reactions, and dogs with immune-mediated disease.

Cost

Expect to pay $80โ€“130 per shot at a standard Australian vet in 2026, or $60โ€“90 at a community clinic or RSPCA clinic. The full puppy series plus first adult booster runs ~$400โ€“600 total. Factor it into your first-year dog budget.

When to skip

Dogs with confirmed prior vaccine reactions, active autoimmune disease, or terminal illness should discuss titre-only or minimum protocols with a vet. There is no good reason to skip vaccination in a healthy puppy โ€” parvo and distemper are both endemic and both lethal.
